Bryce Canyon National Park

See editors note at bottom for some Bryce Canyon nostalgia!

Today we went to Bryce Canyon! It was really fun. We went on the Queens Navajo Trail and there were so many interesting rocks with titles like¨Thors Hammer¨and¨Queen Victoria.¨ But what I didnt like was that it was really steep, yes it was really fun going downhill but you get really tired going uphill. Our campsite was perfect because it had lots of trees (good for climbing), and it had a lot of shade. We also went to the Sheep Creek/Swamp Canyon Trail but  there were no Sheep, no Creek, no Swamp, and lots of Canyon. The map said it was 4 miles but we thought it was more like 6 miles. We also met a family from Germany. It was really fun!

Editors note/from Carolyn: we also celebrated my birthday at Bryce. Such a wonderful place to have a birthday. We took a break from RV cooking and had dinner at the beautiful Bryce Lodge. And Ava bravely attempted a scratch cake in our tiny RV oven. That story will have to wait for another day…

I have fond memories of Bryce from a trip I took with my grandmother over 30 years ago. My grandmother, Barbara [Baba] Homer, took me, my sister and two cousins there when we were small. She flew us all out there, rented a station wagon and took us to the Grand Canyon and Bryce [maybe others but memory fails me….]. We were between the ages of 6 or 7 and maybe 12. I was the oldest and my cousin Rachel the youngest. Somewhere in the family archive there is an adorable picture of the 4 of us wearing matching cowgirl hats sitting on the rim of the GC. I remember several things about the trip. One, my grandma was a total Rockstar. She did all of this by herself – I cant imagine wrangling 4 little girls as deftly as she did. She gave all of us a number and every time we got in the car we had to number off [presumably to avoid leaving one of us behind!]. Two, we stayed in at least one Howard Johnson – remember those?! Three, and this is most important…when we got rowdy, she would pull over on whatever county road we were travelling down and have all 4 of us get out and jog beside the car. Priceless!!! My sister, cousins and I all remember this very distinctly. It wasn’t punishment – we all remember this fondly – she just figured it was a quick way to burn off the boundless energy of children on long car rides. Smart cookie. She died in 91. Boy do I miss her on this trip – wish she could fly out and meet us in the southwest and smell the warm scent of pine needles baking in the sun. So many good memories!
