Zion National Park

As always… Spanish version first, scroll down for English!

Tu Puedes Perder 3 Libras!

Rocas? No. Tu quieres arboles! Sombra!

English version:

Yet again, our wonderful parents made us wake up at 5:00am for another hike (sensing a trend here?).  We drove into Zion at around 6:00 and caught the shuttle that runs through the park at 6:15. The bus was very full so Dad and I got to stand up in the bus holding on to this metal bar which was difficult for me to reach.  Best bus ride EVER (in case you didn’t get that, sarcasm was flooding my voice). The only redeeming quality about that ride was the awesome poster by my head that went something like this:

“DON’T FEED US”

You can lose up to 3 lbs! You’ll even stop biting others!

It was pretty hilarious.  Apparently tons of people were feeding the squirrels which was making them super fat and aggressive, hence the park rangers put up the poster. Eventually, since we were getting off on the last stop, about half the bus cleared out so I could sit and enjoy the view.  Finally, we had arrived.

After such a long bus ride, I was eager to stretch my feet.  We started off on about a 1.5 mile walk to the starting point for the hike we were doing.  It was a beautiful walk. When we arrived at the river, I was so excited to start. The hike was basically going to go through the river the entire time.  So off we started, following the beautiful river through a beautiful canyon. The canyon we were in was not like the other canyons I had seen, devoid of most plants and red (or black in the Black canyon of the Gunnison) in color.  No, this canyon was a muted orange, with streaks of red and white here and there, and teeming with life. There were ferns hanging from the cliff sides, beautiful river rocks (yes, I know they are not alive, I just thought they were cool) and luscious grasses and trees.  Trees.  You have no idea how much I have missed trees, especially in Capitol Reef.  In fact, I missed them so much I began writing a blog post about them, which Mom told me to put in this one, so here it is:

Trees: Now I know what you’re thinking.  What’s so special about trees? Well, let me tell you, have you ever been to the west?  The middle of the country perhaps? Now, apologies in advance for those of you that live there, but I need trees.  Desperately. Picture this: you’re on a 5 mile hike, through cool looking rocks with a little bit of a breeze. You walk the 2.5 miles or so to the turn around point and start walking back.  Now the sun is directly above your head, relentlessly bearing down on you, as you walk back through the never changing red rocks. Rocks.  So many rocks.  You know what I’m thinking around this point?  Boy, would it be nice to have some shade! And you know where you typically get shade from?  No, not the straight rocks that the sun is directly between. The trees.  There are NONE (ok maybe a little but still) in the part of Utah we are in.  Oh how I miss the rustle of leaves, the soft grass, not this prickly dry stuff, and shade! Oh the shade!  Just imagine, taking a break on the soft grass under a lovely tree offering you its leaves as refuge. I was even beginning to miss the squirrels that came with this imaginary forest!  Now, in fairness, we did see a female and baby big horned sheep, but those are cool to see as a special treat sort of thing, I don’t want the goats to become my new squirrells!

I know, a little dramatic, but hey, when you just get back from a 5  mile hike in the scorching sun with no shade, you become a little desperate.  Anyways, the hike was super cool. There were some parts where the water even went to our waists!  Although this was not fun for Hazel, since when the water went to my waist, it went to her chest. She was very cold.  Eventually we got that sorted out with one of Dad’s extra T-shirts, and dried the other swim shirt, and we were all having a great time!  We even saw a waterfall (or water running down the side of the canyon, but still)! Plus, we went through this really cool canyon at one point.  It was super narrow and darker than the rest of the canyon. It was awesome! Eventually we turned around, because if we were to have done the entire canyon it would have been about 9.5 miles, which is a little long, even for us.  Plus we would have had to go back, so…, not happening.

The way back was cool, but more crowded and hotter.  When we got back to the very beginning of the hike, we got in the shuttle, went to our car and drove to a delicious lunch at a Mexican place called Rositas.  Then we went to the RV site to rest. After that we got to see Spider Man: Far From Home! It was really good! Then we had a hearty dinner of pasta, ceasar salad and Dad’s delicious homemade bread.  Just as we were about to go to sleep, I made a decision. After my shower, I went to the bathroom, grabbed some scissors and lopped of four inches of my hair. What can I say? It was in layers and I wanted it level.  Or, as level as you can get cutting your own hair anyway. It looks pretty bad, but it will grow to where I want it by highschool, which was my goal. After I had my fun suprising my parents and Hazel (you should’ve seen their faces) with my hair, I crawled in bed and had a good night sleep.
