Rocky Mountain National Park

(as usual… starting with Spanish – scroll down for English)

Estan amigas? Nunca vas a saber. Somos muy cerca a la comienzo del sendero cuando nosotro verimos tres alce (in spanish elk and moose are described as the same thing.  Now I am talking about Elk and before I was talking about Moose) !

This morning we woke up at the crack of dawn to go on a 6 mile hike in Rocky Mountain National Park.  We stumbled from our beds, whipped up some breakfast half asleep (ok well, our parents made us breakfast) and stumbled into the car.  I wrapped up in a leopard print blanket (it is NOT an ocelot print, Mom) and tried to get some sleep. No sooner had I shut my eyes when we had our first wildlife sighting of the day.  A moose! Two actually. They seemed to be doing some sort of fight/mating ritual thing. Which is weird because they both had no antlers so I am assuming they were girls. Friendly handshake?  Guess we’ll never know. Then we drove a little while longer, with me trying to get some sleep, when we saw elk! They were beautiful and had huge antlers! Shortly after that we arrived at the trail head around 7:00 (it was about an hour and a half drive) and set off on our journey.

As soon as we started a creek emerged from behind the underbrush.  We followed it for a while, lost it and then found it again. We had to cross it multiple times on these cool logs.  Then, after about 1 mile there was a cool waterfall! It wasn’t super impressive, but no matter the size, I love waterfalls.  I would have been perfectly happy if this was the only interesting water feature we saw on the trail, but this path seemed to want to impress me.  Just a little bit after the meh waterfall, we came across a HUGE waterfall! It was awesome to see, cascading down and thundering on the rocks.  It was amazing. Off we went again, hiking up rocky cliff sides, seeing a variety of cool flowers (unfortunately Mom had to stop at EVERY single one and identify them with this new flower book she got) and admiring the beautiful vistas of snow-capped mountains the trail provided us with.  Along the way, we even saw some snow! Hazel was very excited. She picked up some and proclaimed it her baby snow.

Hazel, excited to find snow

Finally, we reached the top.  It was gorgeous.  There was a view of a sparkling lake with the looming mountains behind it.  We sat there for a while, looking at the view and munching on some snacks. The chipmunks were very happy about that part.  A few even climbed on Hazel and my hands trying to grab some of the food! Sneaky little thieves. After an eventful hike, we walked 3 miles back down and went back to the RV site to chilax.  It was barely 11:00 in the morning and already I’d had one of the greatest days of my life!
