After a National Park hiatus, we sure have been cruising through a ton recently! Our last stop was Carlsbad Cavern, which was a pretty cool cave. I must admit though, after seeing one or two caves, I’m kinda over them. Don’t get me wrong, they’re super cool, it’s just they all look extremely similar to me. This one was a decorative cave, which means it has tons of interesting formations like stalactites (from the ceiling) and stalagmites (from the ground). The other type of cave is something like Mammoth cave, which is mostly just rock and not as many formations. Carlsbad Cavern has the biggest cavern in the country, or “room”, and can fit more than two U.S. Capitol buildings! When we first arrived at our desolate RV park basically on the road, we just explored a little, but on our second day we ventured into the cave. On our way we saw about 20 Barbary Sheep, which looked a lot like Bighorns! When we got there we went down and saw the “Big Room” (creative name, right?). It was a bit of a process going down though, because I had to go in an elevator with Dad while Mom and Hazel hiked down through natural entrance. Once we got down they wheeled me around the Big Room and I got to see nearly everything, except a couple parts where there was a sign warning wheelchairs away due to steep grades. My favorite part was a stalactite with some popcorn (rock formation that looks exactly like popcorn) on the end of it, forming a lion’s tail. It was super cool! After that Mom took me to the elevators while Dad and Hazel went out the natural entrance, going 715 feet back up. Then back to the RV to chillax and play board games (Hazel has now consecutively won Settlers of Catan three times; it’s terrible!).
The next day we ventured out to the Guadalupe mountains! We got to our RV park, which was essentially a parking lot, and then went to the Visitor Center. We watched the Park movie, which was made in the 80s and you had to really like Opera music to enjoy it, and then came back. Hazel and I got a lot of school work done while Mom and Dad went on a four mile hike. After that it was pretty much more schoolwork and reading. The next day we were going to go on some more hikes before leaving, but boy was there a lot of rain! And in the desert too, which made it ironic. We didn’t let a little rain bother us though! Mom and I went on a mile paved hike to a tiny man-made pond. It was pretty cool. Dad and Hazel hiked about half of the hike Dad and Mom did the day before and then we met together and left. Beautiful scenery, but a little difficult to hike between rain and a broken patella! Now we’re off to Big Bend National Park.
